Donate by text to support the Haiti disaster

Following the successful use of charity short codes for the Children in Need appeal (see news story here), text donations are now available for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Haiti appeal.

Operated via UK Aggregator Mobile Interactive Group, you can donate £5 by texting GIVE to 70077 from your UK mobile phone. £5 goes to DEC. Each participant pays £5 plus their standard network charge.

BBC Children in Need launched SMS donations on Monday 26th October 2009 and has raised an incredible £1.75m via mobile through £5 donations, marking a first for the charity. The public have donated knowing that every penny has gone directly to BBC Children in Need thanks to mobile network operators waiving their usual fees and the Treasury confirming no VAT charges. Gift Aid has also been available meaning an additional £1.40 for every eligible £5 donation – Meaning a potential extra income of over £500k.

Children in Need use Charity Shortcode

The BBC's Children in Need campaign is using the new Charity Shortcode range.

A donation of £5 can be made by texting the word 'donate' to shortcode 70077.

The BBC has implemented a text message donation service for its BBC Children In Need event, this Friday 20th November.

Donations of five pounds can be made to BBC Children In Need by sending a text message which begins with the word "DONATE" to 70077.  Using this method, people can send donate up to seven times in one day from their mobile phone.

O2 leads the way to ensure charities benefit from text donations

O2 today announces that it is to cut charges to ensure charities receive an extra 10p in the pound from text donations made by O2 customers from November.

Charities of all sizes will now be able to receive an estimated extra 10p in the pound for text donations of up to £10 made via dedicated 70 prefix short codes. O2 will ensure registered UK charities that opt to use a dedicated short code will receive 90 per cent of the donation. O2 charges a small fee to cover its network costs, VAT on the cost of the text message, insurance against bad debt, and a range of third party costs.
